The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. The Corsair was designed as a carrier-based aircraft. However its difficult carrier landing performance rendered the Corsair unsuitable for Navy use until the carrier landing issues were overcome when used by the British Fleet Air Arm. The Corsair thus came to and retained prominence in its area of greatest deployment: land based use by the U.S. Marines. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair. The exploits of Marine Corps squadron VMF-214, which flew the Corsair in the Pacific during the war, were depicted in the popular 1976 made-for-television movie Baa Baa Black Sheep and the follow-up television series Baa Baa Black Sheep, also called Black Sheep Squadron, which aired from 1976 to 1978. Joe Pass was an American virtuoso jazz guitarist of Sicilian descent. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century. His extensive use of walking bass lines, melodic counterpoint during improvisation, use of a chord-melody style of playing and outstanding knowledge of chord inversions and progressions opened up new possibilities for the jazz guitar and had a profound influence on later guitarists. I'm a big fan of ink and marker illustrations, from fast storyboards, concept thumbnails, product renders, car illustrations, etc. Over the years, I've managed to amass quite a big amount of markers of different brands. Here are some of my favorite markers and some sketches.

One of the sketches I used for a painting project. "Kandila" is Filipino for "candle".

This is an illustration for a poster of Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. Doing it the old fashioned way. Those are Tombo dual brush pens. Too bad I can't get them here anymore. Here's the thumbnail rough I drew on my sketchpad. Here's my favorite version of the cover as illustrated by Leo and Dianne Dillon. I just heard that Mr. Dillon passed away May 26, 2012. Sad, sad loss. R.I.P. Mr. Dillon.

Here's a preview of Isabel, a digital piece.

Another acrylic piece. Here's the underpainting in earthy warm tones. These were brushed in with thick strokes of paint. This was then left to dry. Then the colors I chose for the palette were slathered in using a painting knife. This time, the colors were applied in fast and furious strokes so that the acrylics would still mix while they were wet. The piece was then left to dry. another set of adjustment were made, again with a knife in fast, thick strokes. I'm tasking a break from the summer heat and maybe finish this within the week. The finished piece soon:)

More work on this one over the weekend. almost done.

Here's what's on my easel. The painting is 20" x 20" and is being made in acrylic. I'm hoping to finsih it this Holy Week. Perfect for Easter Sunday:)

Here are three comps for a portrait project I'm working on. The composition's very important in making the portrait succesful so I'm still mulling over which one to work on. At this time, I'm going for comp 1. Comp 1 Comp 2 Comp 3 Colored comp to come!
